World Environment Day 5 June 2008
Every 5th of June is a day used by the United Nations to stimulate worldwide awareness of environmental issues.
Banana peel reflex
Long, long ago, when we were all monkeys swinging in the trees and hunted those elusive bananas for lunch, a reflex was fixed in the genes and are still present today: the banana peel reflex.
How to diagnose the reflex?
Once you know what it is, it is easy to recognise. The primitive ancestor had the banana clutched in its grubby paw. Peeled the banana, eat it. Banana peel left over in hand. Open hand. Peel falls. Peel left behind in the bush.
The primitive monkey and the bush is gone (well, except in the USA, but that is a different story). Replaced with a sidewalk and a candy-wrapper.
Are you an advanced member of the species? Is this reflex still part of you? Do you know primitive members of the species in which this reflex is still present?
