New addition to HistoWeb: Annotated drawings. Starting with muscle, this will be expanded as time permits.

New website is up an running: HistoWeb.

This is primarily aimed at serving medical and dental students at the University of Pretoria from outside the firewall. Other students of Histology could also benefit. If you find mistakes, please send me a note.

To use the system, read the Need help link at the top left of the front page. All functions should work well in Firefox and Seamonkey but newer versions of IE will also work. It has not been tested with Chrome, but I also don’t foresee any issues in that regard. The pages make extensive use of Javascript, so it should be enabled.

I have added a large number of small photographs related to archaeology in a photogallery. This is a temporary installation, but feel free to browse and comment. Larger images available on request.

Modern manufacture, ancient style.

These beads and bracelets are made in Venda today. The style still follows the ancient pattern established even before the days of Thulamela.

This is the edge of the settlement, with the excavation of Ingwe’s grave taking place in the foreground. The edge of the cliff is at the bottom edge of the image, with the rest of the settlement spread over the level area to the back.

In the foreground the cliff can be seen that protected the inhabitants on the southern side. Trenches from the archaeological excavation is visible in the middle right-hand side of the image. (Image out of focus).

A human on the left give some indication of the scale. The cliffs can be clearly seen, as well as the excavation trenches. In the background is the boabab at the entrance to the royal area.

Excavation of Ingwe’s grave is busy on the lower left. Various entrances and walkways into the royal areas can be seen. The boabab would have been the reception area for any visitors to the settlement.

The enclosure where Losha was found, is the second enclosure from the left in the mid-view. This image was taken facing west.

Aerial view of Mapunguwbe An earlier site, related to Thulamela.

A golden rhinoceros, staff, bowl and thousands of beads were found on this site. All of the walls on this site is covered with deposit and sand, or has collapsed over time.
